My refrigerator is covered with magnet letters that my friends use to write secret messages to me (that everyone can see). Right now, the letters say, “My cat is amazing…he can play the guitar.” I don’t think any of my friends have cats. I don’t have one either, but if I did, I would definitely teach the cat how to play the guitar. Or maybe the mandolin – it’s smaller.
I like it when I wake up in the morning and my hair is standing up, like, 6 inches off the top of my head. I feel proud, like I’ve done this on purpose and accomplished something extraordinary and special while I was sleeping. Then I’m torn between wanting to photograph it and wanting to walk around in public with it like that.
At least three times a week, I read the New York Times, which my neighbor Andre gives me for free. I love the newspaper and feeling informed, but I’m always a little disturbed at the fact that on page 3 (the beginning of the International Section), right next to pictures of exploded buildings in Afghanistan and stories about slave labor in Brazil, there are ads for Tiffany & Co. tennis bracelets and Dolce & Gabbana bags. I’m not disparaging Tiffany & Co. or Dolce & Gabbana: they make fantastic products…but one can’t help but appreciate the irony of selling insanely expensive things that are essentially useless on the same page as a story about people in Burundi who were eaten by bears. I love the New York Times magazine (inserted into the newspaper on Saturday and Sunday), although I don’t like how it smells…they should put cologne and perfume samples in it to freshen it up. I’ll start a letter-writing campaign right after I teach the cat to play guitar.
I have a solid personal conviction that much of what happens around us is random, and I’m endowed with a healthy amount of cynicism. If I were able to assign a second headline to this ad, it might be “I (Heart) Cynicism”. Because cynicism makes me laugh. Like in Wes Anderson movies. I heartily believe that one can live in wonder of the world while viewing it through the lens of randomness.
